My family always loved my son growing up. They had him spend summers when he was a teen and were very proud of all his accomplishments including his time in the Air Force and service in Iraq. When he was 27 he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. They all said that I wasn’t in this alone and we are here for you. They immediately distanced themselves from my son and I. To this day 11 years later they have never once visited him when in the hospital, never called to see if we needed anything. What broke my heart is as close as my mom continued to be to my son in the last years of her life they kept her away from us never inviting us to holiday dinners or family gatherings. My son is not violent and has a very kind giving nature. I still remain his only family member he has and I refuse to ever give up on him. I’m cordial with them if I see them but I never ask anything because I don’t want the disappointment of hearing all their excuses. I hurt for my son because he feels all the years before his illness was just an act.
