I was almost crying when I first watched this. There is NO WAY this ship is not canon.

Throughout the entire movie (Or at least from when Nao asked Makoto /that/ question), I kept having this inner feeling that the movie was trying, in the most subtle way it could, to express and deal with Makoto coming to terms with his sexuality and feelings for Haru. As someone who has personally struggled with my own sexuality, I just related to him in a way I'd never done before.

Really, think about it. Try to watch the movie again with the mindset of Makoto struggling with his sexuality and it all still makes sense. What really brings it home, is when he literally says he is confused when he is together with Haru.
Not to mention that it is Haru's "Makoto is Makoto" line that snaps him out of his misery, and the OST playing there is even called "My True Self." How can that not be a reference to this young boy finally accepting who he is?

Could he mean love in a platonic way in this scene? Meh, sure, but everything about this scene; the music, the setting, the dialogue and the conclusion, I am sorry, but it reeks of romance. And we all freaking know that had one of them been a girl, there would be no questions asked.

Makoto and Haru are the most canon non-canon ship out there. Just saying, and god I'd give my arm up for season 3 to finally let them cross that line.

I love how this anime really pays attention to detail and takes even the littlest things in consideration. They draw them as tiny kiddos for their elementary school days and then as almost adults with toned bodies as high schoolers. But anime rarely shows the transitional phase of puberty where they’re gaining muscle and height but still have the baby face and leanness of childhood. I’m really impressed that I can tell how old they are just from the way they’re drawn.

Whether you regard them platonically or romantically, you can't deny that Makoharu is the SUPERIOR SHIP. Their bond is so pure and precious, and it's healthier imo. They know what each other is thinking or feeling without any word, and you can tell they truly care for each other. I could only hope to have a love like that. 🥺👉👈💖
