As part of their "Voices of Innocence - wonder • hope • joy" concert set, The Vocal Art Ensemble of Davis, CA presented the Echo Song (O la, o che bon eccho!) of Orlando di Lasso. This is a custom English translation of the work.

This piece was intended to illustrate the sheer sense of play in youth. The song has the singers having a mock 'conversation' with their echo, and goes through a wide variety of emotions and reactions to their own words being spit back at them.

The English version... Perhaps the same as the song sung by my distant relations, George Bucher Ayres and relative Susan Bucher Ayres. Here is the concert header, from 1864:

The "Old Folks" first Grand Concert, Franklin Hall, Chambersburg
on Friday Evening, June 17th, : 1864.
For the benefit of the U. S. Christian Commission.
Musical Conductor - George B. Ayres.

Well, I'm very positive - how they did it without four voices (two male voices - bariton - bass) and let is sound like a real Lasso interpretation at a good rhythm is quite surprising ! With a few good male singers they would catch it and win the 'cup'. And yes it is a VERY difficult song and should have the four voices. Nevertheless - it's impressive.
