How did people in early medieval Wales live? And how did their lives change between the departure of the Romans in the early fifth century AD and the coming of the Normans to Wales over 600 years later? In this 10-Minute Talk, Nancy Edwards considers some remarkable archaeological monuments, highlighting what these reveal about aspects of identity during this period.

Speaker: Professor Nancy Edwards FBA, Professor of Medieval Archaeology, Bangor University

10-Minute Talks are a series of pre-recorded talks from Fellows of the British Academy screened each Wednesday, 13:00-13:10, on YouTube. Our speakers will type responses to a selection of audience questions in the YouTube comments section between 13:10 and 13:30 on the day of their talk (questions can be added to the YouTube comments section).

Subtitles, also known as closed captions, are available on our YouTube videos. You can access them by clicking on the 'CC' button or gear icon on the video. The 'CC' button and gear icon are usually located at the bottom of videos.

So glad you saved this for later viewing as I had hoped to listen in live, but an unexpected event precluded it. Very interesting; thank you.

How far would you subscribe to the importance of ancestry for the Welsh, displayed not only in monumental terms but the extensive genealogies (eg. P.C.Bartrum's lists for the period prior to c1000AD.

Many thanks for the information abt yr upcoming book & the other sources. One of the other comments has touched on the welsh fascination for genealogy. My grandmother kept a notebook setting out our relationship to Owain Glyndwr & the Black Prince - a little later than your period of course.
