The Charaideo Moidams burial sites in India are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Charaideo historical site is in Assam. It was the first capital city of the Ahoms. Moidams means burial mounds. A mound is a raised earthen formation. The Charaideo Moidams are royal burial sites where the kings and queens of the Ahom Dynasty were buried. The more powerful a person was, the higher their burial mound. Along with the king's body, all the items believed to be needed in the afterlife, such as horses, servants, and livestock, were also buried. Because of their similarity to ancient Egyptian burial rites, they are called the 'Pyramids of Assam.' Although Hindu tradition typically involves cremation, in the case of the Hindu Ahom rulers, we see burials. The Ahom Dynasty ruled major parts of Assam and the North East region for nearly 600 years. It is amazing that the rich legacy of one of India's longest-ruling dynasties is finally coming back into public consciousness.
