What to visit
2) Bergen city center: you can reach the city center from the airport via the Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) in around 50 minutes. It costs 39 NOK (~ 4 euro). Download the application Skyss Billett to buy the public transport tickets. The Bergen city center is very easy to walk, you don't need public transport. The main attractions to not miss are the Lake Lungegard, around this lake are located 3 of the 4 buildings of the Kode art museum, the other one is located in the park Julemarked Byparken. If you walk a little bit you can reach the Bergen Chathedral. For a relaxing walk go to the Torgallmenningen where at the end you can see the Saint John´s Church. Don't miss Bryggen, the Bergen's oldest district. At over 1000 years old, it was originally founded as a trade center for stockfish. Bryggen was for almost 400 years a German trade office. Originally this area was bigger than now and included also the Saint Mary´s Church, one of the Norway´s oldest building. On 1702 a big fire destroyed the entire area. The buildings went then rebuilt preserving the original architecture. Today 61 out of more than 200 buildings in Bryggen are recognised as landmark buildings.
3) Eat good: The fish market is an indoor market where you can find restaurants and fresh fish. Try the king crab of Norway. They also make excellent sushi and sashimi.
4) Fløibanen: The Fløibanen will bring you in around 8 minutes at 320 meters above the sea level, on top of the mount Fløyen, one of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. I paid the round trip around 13 euro. Bergen is surrounded by mountains, probably this has something to do with the fact that the word Bergen in German means mountains. Mount Fløyen is the ideal starting point for exploring the mountains around Bergen. This place is a paradise for hiking and mountain biking. From mount Fløyen if you hike for around 12 and a half km you can reach mount Ulriken, with a high of 643 metres above sea level is the highest of the 7 mountains surrounding Bergen. You can also reach mount Ulriken via cable car.
5) Bergen Fortress: This is one of Norway’s oldest fortifications. The construction started in the early 1500s. Today the fortress is a military base and concert venue.
6) Cruise on the Nærøyfjord: The Nærøyfjord is 17 km long and the narrowest point is only 250 m wide. The passage through Nærøyfjord is one of the most dramatic fjord trips in Europe and that’s why is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
7) Stegastein viewpoint: The Stegastein viewpoint offers a spectacular view over the Aurlandsfjord. It is located at 20 minutes drive from Flåm, the gateway for the Nærøyfjord.
