Thanks to QUEN FLO, Jaguar Auburn Inc, Andrew98G, and SeepMan Productions for the suggestion!
Back to 1998! Back when the web was just rolling out to consumers, and back when Microsoft wanted to get everyone in on the Internet and the World Wide Web! Windows 98 SE is an upgrade to the original version of Windows 98, and was released in 1999, just a year before Windows ME was released, and a year after Windows 98 First Edition was released. The original version of Windows 98 was released in 1998, which is how it got its name. It focused on improving hardware support, with features like dual monitor support, better USB support, as well as other general device improvements. However, the main focus was Internet. Microsoft had bundled Internet Explorer with Windows 98, so that everyone would be able to access the Internet if they had it installed in their home. This is also how Microsoft ended up being sued by the U.S. Department of Justice over Antitrust concerns. The Second Edition of 98 brought new versions of Internet Explorer and Outlook, and other various Internet-based features. Overall, Windows 98 was a very substantial release by Microsoft, bringing some major improvements over Windows 95.

I have updated the links in the video description as some people said that they were having issues. Everything should be working now! :)

Thank you so much for this video! I finally got my childhood OS up and running via VMWare, complete with sound! Now to upload some songs from 1998 for that full nostalgia effect! Thanks again and keep up the good work! :D

Mjd, I just want to let you know that I really enjoy your content. I like how it is clean so I can show my younger cousin who is also into computers and wants to see the Operating Systems. Keep up the great work!

Okay so I've installed Windows 98 SE on a virtual machine. It works great and all. I even got it to recognize 1GB of RAM. Installed all the helpful updates to modernize it somewhat. I liked the nostalgia but it really is not usable with our modern internet. Most websites block all browsers from Windows 9x. Even the 3rd party browsers like old Firefox and Netscape, although I was able to get more out of them than IE6. Great nostalgia but not functional outside of a VM. There really is no hardware that this old OS will allow to run. I'll continue to explore Linux. Great video thank you for all your efforts!

You should do a video on the 98 PC with Windows Longhorn, either a Pre Reset, or Post Reset, or maybe both! I think that is a good idea Michael!

i remember when you used to have to have a separate floppy disk to get it to install because it wouldn't boot from the CD

nobody else seems to be having this issue but when i try to do the setup after it looks for plug and play devices and i reboot it it keeps saying that the kernel performed an illegal operation and that i'm missing files

You may already know this, but the OEM version is bootable (no boot disk req.) and you dont have to fdisk and format in DOS, just "Boot from cd ROM".

I need help desperately with my Windows 98 SE VMWare installation because I'm having a problem that no one else seems to be having with their installation. So I've been trying to install this in Workstation 14 Pro on my Ryzen 7 PC for two months now, my vm settings are 256 MB of RAM and 8 GB of hard disk space (as Michael has his set up), I am using same ISO and boot image down in the description (for Second Edition). As far as running FDISK, formatting C:, running setup and going through selecting components, typing information, product key, ect. that went fine for me. But then I reach the point where it says, "Setting up hardware: Windows 98 is now setting up your hardware and any Plug and Play devices you may have..." At this point I'm supposed to have the date & time settings come up, but instead I get two error messages, the first one says:

"Explorer: This program has performed and illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

When I click on Details, I get: "EXPLORER caused an exception 6d007eH in module EXPLORER.EXE at 0167:0040a067."

Now, the second message says:

"Error Starting Program: The SHELL32.DLL file is linked to missing export cuts off here).

Clicking OK on both of them doesn't do any good as the operating system just sits there and when I restart the vm that same kinds of messages bombard the entire installation process, doing a second restart will get me to the login window but when I hit Cancel the same messages come back up and Windows will not start up, so my vm is basically a brick.

Now I have no clue what I'm doing wrong here, because I have followed along with this video along with similar videos to almost exactly what they were doing and I have done thorough research to see if anyone else has ever had this problem and as to what exactly causes this problem and have found less than relevant results.

I have tried numerous methods, including:
Running hardware compatibility for VMWare Workstation
Setting USB compatibility to 1.1 in vm settings
Splitting the virtual hard disk into multiple files
Reducing the hard disk size to 2 GB.
Adjusting the RAM
Enabling Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI checkbox in vm settings
Masking the Ryzen processor
Using a different ISO from a different source

And I STILL get the EXACT same error messages in the EXACT same point during the installation process.

Here are my PC specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus AX370 Gaming K5
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 Eight-Core Processor 3.00 GHz
RAM: 16 GB DDR4
SSD: Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250 GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda SD2000DM006 2 TB
External Hard Drive (Back-up): Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8 TB (USB 3.0)
Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
Host Operating System: Windows 10 Pro x64 Version 1709 (Build 16299.125)
Two-Monitor Setup: Both are ASUS VS248 Resolution is 1920x1080
Speakers: Bose Companion 5 USB 2.0
Keyboard: Logitech USB 2.0
Mouse: Microsoft USB 2.0

I know some of these specs aren't necessary to list but I did anyway just in case one of these may be behind the culprit of the problem.

This is not only really irritating me because I feel that I'm the only one having this problem but it also really baffles me because there are no videos here on Youtube or elsewhere (that I'm currently aware of) that have ANY evidence of the same issue that I'm having and in some of my attempts, I've had my vm settings set to the EXACT same specs as this video along with other tutorial videos and I have problems while the installations in the tutorial videos are uneventful. And I was really looking forward to getting this running and installing Plus! on it and recreating the themes for my Windows 7 vm. Any helpful (and constructive) comments will be very much appreciated. Thanks.
