How sweet that you are going to make some things for your biggest supporter! It took me forever to be able to make a pretty gather. My biggest tips are to make your first line of gathering stitches a little further in from the seam allowance (so at 3/4" for a 5/8" seam allowance). You will have to pick these stitches out later, but it will make for a pretty gather. Once you sew the gather, instead of pressing the gathered seam, hover your steam iron over that seam from the right side. This way the gathers won't flatten. I'm pretty self-taught too, but this is how I get gathers that look pretty to me.

Don't worry about gathers or buttonholes! Just do a few practice rounds on some scraps and it'll turn out great :)

I just ran across your channel I love your pattern’s choice can’t wait to see your makes, for the gathering and your buttons hold just practice on scraps fabric and you got this, a friendly suggestion for the patterns from the display racks give the pattern number from the inside instructions sheet for the pattern that will be in the drawer.
