In this episode, we talk about the wild popularity of rug hooking in the 1930s and how that set the stage for Lillian Burke to turn her artistic talent to rug design. Hi Ladies (not sure if you are all ladies, so apologies if not). So nice to see you have found Lillian's work. Edward Langille's scholarship is thorough and impecable. It was a great personal gift to me that he wrote this book. "Mahr-Gahr-Rhee" is how the Margaree is pronounced. I am a descendent of Mabel Bell and Marian Fairchild, and they, plus Lillian would be delighted with your interest in their efforts. The work Langille did to repair the rift between the Cheticamp ladies and Burke was wonderful. It was done with the intent to help these women lift themselves out of poverty and give tnem more self-determination. Both women were suffragettes. My mother remembered Burkie well, and she was practically family. I hope someday to honor her memorial site with something more significant. I don't know of the article by Marian to which you refer, but will keep an eye out for it. I was able to discover that some of Burkie's metal work still exists, so that was exciting. Hopefully Edward and I will get together (after COVID19) to have those items authenticated. Anyway, cheers! I live with my husband in Cape Breton, not far from the AGB estate. If any of you make it this way in the future, look me up, I am in Baddeck, and I would be happy to show you some of the original rugs. Cheers! Keep hooking! Marian Bell Whitcomb
