Blew me away when I first heard it. Also the fact the all the iconic original dx7 presets were made in the span of just 4 days!

I felt the same way about that sound when I heard it. It wasn’t just thst the sound was a closer approximation than you could get with analog synths, it was how organically it responded to velocity.

Recently I heard a sound set for the DX7, essentially recreating the presets – which were done in four days. These took 20 years, and some of the sounds – especially horns – sound absolutely amazing. As if you're listening to a physical modelling synth.

I used to layer that voice with a pad on the DX5 what soundwise unexpectedly worked.

I love all those clangorous tones FM synthesis creates.

Of course you could do that on almost any 2 oscillator analogue synth with a ring modulator but who has time to learn all that when you can just select a preset.

Probably sounded amazing because there was no way to get anything like this from an analogue synth! Prob the same reason everyone was obsessed with the DX7 bell sounds, an analogue synth just can't make that kind of sound.
