Jim Crow Redux: Georgia GOP Governor Signs “Egregious” Voter Suppression Law Targeting Black Voters

Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp has signed a sweeping elections bill that civil rights groups are blasting as the worst voter suppression legislation since the Jim Crow era. The bill grants broad power to state officials to take control of election management from local and county election boards. It also adds new voter ID requirements, severely limits mail-in ballot drop boxes, rejects ballots cast in the wrong precinct and allows conservative activists to challenge the eligibility of an unlimited number of voters. Since the 2020 election, Republican state lawmakers have introduced over 250 bills in 43 states to limit voter access. The elections bill is “extremely egregious” in its restriction of voting rights, says journalist Anoa Changa. “They’re continuing to put processes in place that reinforce these narratives that … have long existed within the Republican toolkit to help get their base fearful in terms of what might come in terms of Black voters and other voters of color.”

It's also targeting disabled voters so that if they're in line a long time they will be forced to leave if they need food or water

Expecting people to present ID when they vote only protects the sanctity of the ballot. Hardly oppressive.

They make it harder for us to vote but black folk have overcome those efforts before and we will continue to do so. They cant stop us and they're afraid because they know it.

Let's see it's not illegal to own a long gun or a handgun without owners license nor is one required in Georgia. It is not illegal to open carry a long gun without a permit nor is one even required. However, it is now ILLEGAL to hand a person FOOD OR WATER while they wait in line to vote. I wonder have they legalized marijuana there yet. Because somebody is smoking something in that state.

In the bill, there is a minimum of 17 days to vote (including election day). On election day in Georgia, you can vote from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, and the days before counties have the option to have voting between 9:00 am and 5:00pm at the minimum. Counties can expand time to 7:00 am to 7:00 pm if wanted. For some reason you can't be there, you can request a no-excuse absentee ballot, id is required. Just provide either a valid driver's license, social security number, valid passport, student id card issued by Georgia public colleges, or valid tribal id. If somehow you don't have either of those things. You can provide a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or any other government document that shows your name and address is acceptable. To be honest it makes it easier to vote.

This is a tragedy. Words cannot describe the depths... where are the moral and ethical governing bodies?

Last time I flew Delta I had to provide a valid government issued ID.
Last time I was at Coca-Cola I had to have a BADGE/ID to enter the building after they checked my drivers license.
ID to purchase alcohol
ID to Drive
ID to Fly
ID to Passport to travel country to country
ID to Enter Federal Buildings
ID for BC/BS Medical & healthcare
ID to open financial accounts at a bank
ID College / University ID to enter dorms
ID Work Badge/ID to identify employees

an ID to vote, well that is just crazy and racist.

There is NO voter suppression to vote for those who are legally eligible and registered with the presentation of that person's identification. What is the problem? Where is the suppression? People have to show some kind of identification, health, or other card when they receive services. Would you call that suppression? Of course not!!!
