AP poll breakdown: Andy Katz Q&A, reactions to college basketball rankings (12/09/24)

March Madness correspondent Andy Katz went live on Bleacher Report to break down the men's basketball AP poll and his own Power 37 rankings released on Dec. 9, after the fifth week of the regular season.

Duke over UK? Head scratcher. Duke has two losses, UK has one loss and beat Duke on a neutral floor. UK’s only loss was a close one at #16 Clemson.

If we're going based on these current rankings:

Colorado

Wins over 18 Connecticut
Losses to 3 Iowa State and 21 Michigan State

Connecticut

Wins over unranked Baylor
Losses to unranked Colorado, unranked Dayton, and unranked Memphis

Make it make sense!

I feel Andy’s a little inconsistent. Doesn’t mention that Houston losses are an All last second losses and two of those in overtime to three top 25 teams. If you’re gonna give all the other big name school credit for close losses, then you gotta do the same for Houston.

Seems to be pretty unanimous that Duke shouldn’t be ahead of Kentucky. It appears that beating 1 top 3 team at home outweighs 2 beating 2 top 10 teams on a neutral floor. Maybe Dukes schedule is a little tougher so far but that’s because they had to schedule tougher with a very weak ACC. Lowest ranked SEC school is 68th in Kenpom.

San Diego State is underrated every single year. Purdue needs to go. Kansas isn’t strong. Cincinnati is weak. Tennessee hasn’t really played anybody. Some of these schools have yet to play a ranked team .
