Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are released from prison, and despite great efforts to ensure that these men and women stay on the other side of the bars, more than half of them are locked back up in a matter of months. AEI's Brent Orrell examines where existing reentry practices fail and what new approaches could be taken to prevent recidivism.

I did 1.5yrs in state when I was 24, then 3.5yrs in Feds when I was 27, and then 5.5yrs in feds when I was 38...I had to change people, places & things, live for a real chance at life as a father of my 8 yf old princess, RDAP helped, programs etc, religion..mainly I had to make the decision, and my parents and sister are a huge support. It isn't easy and my daughters mom and her resentment towards me has made my re-entry 10X more difficult. If you're not going to support someone, then stay out their life except for coparenting! Especially bcuz there's a child, involved now. A parent is not entitled to the child just bcuz the mom or dad went to jail, if anything prison allows u to reconfigure ur life to become a btter person and better suited parent even! I'm trying my best, God knows I am...

Also jailing ppl for quality of life crimes or misdemeanors at all is bullshit, requiring homeless people with no transportation to show up to parole and court dates is a set up for patole violation. I know someone who got put away on a misdemeanor for walking around at 2am, he gets out after 2 mos on jail but he can't get to court so he's picked up on a bench warrant within a wk. This has been going on for 2 yrs he's spent 90% of in jail, never even committed a real crime. He will spend years in and out of jail for not ever being able to get to p.o. or court everytime they let him out. Halfway houses on this county you have to pay 400$ rent a month, how does a homeless person with no job. Also he has mental health but he denies it abd has never been diagnosed so they cant even give him counseling without his asking for it. As a result now he has met and lived with a bunch of criminals and likely will become a criminal when all he was was a depressed homeless person caught walking in a nice neighborhood at night.

So tell us, AEI….what is your stance on private prisons? You advocate for reducing government by turning over many functions to private industry….correct? Does that carry over to the massive private prison industrial complex?
