I used to dog-sit a Samoyed named Casey. He liked to give hugs. If you'd kneel in front of him he'd put his front legs on your shoulders and squeeze, just like a human would hug. Even his owners didn't know why he started doing it, but I'm sure in no time at all he learned that he got all kinds of attention and positive reinforcement when he did it, so all you had to do was kneel down and hold out your arms and he'd come running for a hug. He was a great dog with a great personality, he just couldn't be left alone for any length of time. It would stress him out and he'd chew through walls and howl.
