Green Manure (Hairy Vetch) Cover Crop Harvest

preview_player

It's time to cut down the hairy vetch and use it as a green manure. We found some nitrogen nodules and compare the two hugelkultur beds - one with the cover crop and one without.

That’s a good harvest Colleen and Jason, a leafy crop would follow on nicely because of the nitrogen fix, great root structure, this is how gardening should be done, one big circle of improvement, I would just put the cardboard on top and put the greens aside to mix in a new compost heap, how long ago did you sow the hairy vetch?, many thanks for sharing, kind regards

When Colleen turned the trimmer on with the cover still on it! LOL! I've so been there. 🤣 And those daikons! Massive.
I love you two! You make me smile every time I watch your videos! Have a wonderful week my friends!
I'm not an aforementioned "big brain" but I have done this before and occasionally they start to resprout after cutting them so don't be surprised if you need to go back through again to give an extra haircut. I used a green manure/cover crop mix though and I can't recall if it was the vetch that kept resprouting or something else.

Brilliant guys. Something like cabbage in that bed next?
Have a great week.
PS - I used to know a gal called Hairy Vetch 😂

Always a great thing to do. Great soil conditioner. Vetch seems like a great choice. Think you have sold me on a hedge trimmer.

Good Morning to you both and your lunch looked fabulous .What a great cropping of hairy vetch, what an awesome name for it too. I just love saying it.. Hairy Vetch.. wink.. I wish my season was long enough to do this... still snow on the ground and ground still frozen solid.. But, oh my dreams of B.C. weather is in my forecast. Great video and did you eat your radishes? Take care, from Laura in Ontario

Nice and thick hairy vetch! This is february and mine is not nearly as thick but I don't plan on terminating it until late April. I can't put cardboard on top because I plan to plant tomatoes in that bed. I am just planning on terminating it with a shovel cut just below the surface. Once I plant my tomato plants, I planning on putting the leaves around them as green mulch.

Looks great! That bed would be great for brassica or beans now! Happy growing 🌱

The hedge trimmer was my tool of choice for terminating the cover crop too. I think you have a solid plan with cutting and covering the bed while on vacation. BTW: I start my sunflowers on 4/15 in cell trays.
