I explored a Chicago auto auction where cars listed as Vandalism damage were actually totaled due to bullet holes. Each car tells a crazy story but one question I kept asking myself was, why were these totaled? Could they be fixed? Ok, that was two questions but watch until the end to see the worst one of all.

The wires hanging down on the Scat Pack Charger are for a dealer installed Mopar tracking system. Was definitely stolen by someone who knows Mopars. They knew to look for the tracking system and cut the wires.

at 11:45 you can see the "hail" went through the back seat headrest and then towards the front window. That front passenger seat was probably reclined a lot more at the time of the hail damage

the reason they are totaled out is because insurance pays for the car after 30 days and sometimes they dont find the cars for months, so when they do find the car thats they payed for its automaticly sent to auction with totaled

Just FYI I've been on the retail side of the car biz for 16 years, and wholesale side for almost 5.
In the PNW, the damage only needs to meet or exceed as low as 25% of KBB high Retail book OR average list price of 3 similar vehicles within 500 miles to be totalled, or sometimes up to 50% of wholesale book. It often depends on the insurance company, and if the customer fights for it to be totalled. That being said, USAA will total vehicles out for almost anything. USAA is what a majority of military personnel use for insurance. MOPAR vehicles are commonly purchased by members of the military brand new because Jeep chrysler dodge ram etc offer significant discounts to military. Especially something like an SRT/HELLCAT Charger Challenger Jeep etc etc.
I would start checking glove compartments and above the visors for registrations and insurance cards (off camera). My bet is you'll notice a lot of these vehicles that you're unsure of why they're totalled are going to be registered to the bunkers of your closest military base, you'll start noticing a lot of USAA & Liberty Mutual insurance cards. As for the ones that clearly have been shot at... But have NO BLOOD VISIBLE, and smell like OZONE, those are HAZMAT vehicles. They've been deemed HAZMAT, they've been cleaned of all blood and bodily fluids up to HAZMAT standards which costs the insurance company a ton of money. From there, it goes to the auction. I could elaborate some more ideas later on when I have more time. Let me know that you see this part first, and if you think I'm on the right track for your region. Take care, and ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES!!

That 2021 Range was a rental, hence the “no smoking” sticker on the dash.

I used to work for Insurance Auto Auction (IAA) and my favorite part of working there was trying to investigate what caused these accidents or "totaled" cars even though I had all the details of the vehicle. I still like going to junkyards and looking at other junked/crashed cars when I'm buying parts.

Land Rover offer a bullet proof Range Rover, I think that may be the way to go if you’re buying one in Chicago.

Pretty sad to see such a total disregard for human life and personal property. Jeez! Remind me to stay out of Chicago.

A guy I went to school with was killed in his car buying drugs try to drive off without paying and the guy fired one shot and it got him in the head. Probably involved 20 dollars in drugs. What a waste of life.

That's not an animal in the Jeep tailpipe. It's the wadding from the muffler. When they were roasting the tires the exhaust got super hot and the wadding let go. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

In the UK if a car is stolen I believe some insurance companies given them the option to NOT take it back if recovered.
The car is then worth less as it is then recorded as stolen. Effectively totalling the value and the companies then right them off.
Maybe some of these are the same?

I lived in Chicago working in IT for a large architectural firm and I left in 2011 and live in Texas now and it was the best thing I did for my quality of life! Thanks for another great video Alex!

I haul cars for a living and anymore I only do IAA and Copart. I’m around springfield mo so I hit kc, stl, tulsa, Little Rock etc. and it’s wild how many cars I’ve hauled all shot up out of the southern Illinois (East stl)... the craziest part is they do their best to kinda clean it up but I’ve seen plenty of bio material if you know what I mean. Always makes me uneasy. It’s especially weird when the car is shot up enough with enough blood in the seat foam you know someone didn’t make it, and somehow the holes don’t show up in the pics and the black leather didn’t show it either. Customer bought a Lincoln MKS for his 75 yr old mom listed as hail. Ended up having to part it out and find another one because there was so much blood on everything in the daylight in person. Just crazy
