the productivity increase from '79 to 2020 was from companies investing in automation and other tech that increased the output per employee.
It's not that employees were working 61.8% more, or harder hours. (A little thing called "the internet", and "mobile computing" came along in there)

The majority of that productivity increase as I understand it is due to automation and mechanisation. So your value is still the same, but machines increase your relative productivity. But the machines cost money and maintenance. In addition, what you produce is now overall cheaper as well. Because there's more competition and everyone can produce it cheaper. Because it's all relative, that's why you don't notice a major increase in your income. I'm sure some part of it is a few at the top. Getting much wealthier, I'm not sure how much.
