I can see Apple keeping M1 in the base MacBook Air then offering M2 as an upgrade but keeping M1 as the sole chip for the product would be very strange.

If the M2 MacBook Pro is getting the same specs as the M2 Air, then it’ll have to have a few things that the larger Pros have, like the mini-LED, ProMotion, the extra ports, or a 14 inch screen size to make people want to cough up an extra $300-$400 for it.

I have a hard time believing that Apple would release an M2 chip in entry-level models that rivals the performance of M1 pro chips in previous more expensive models. Although, something similar has happened before where the Ipad Air received an updated chip and still sold at a discount compared to the Ipad Pro due to its better display technology. It will be interesting to see how they decide to structure their lineup.

I have a feeling that the white keyboard on the air is a smart & deliberate move on Apple’s part. People have been waiting for quite a long time for an affordable successor to the M1 to upgrade to. There are people like my dad who like black/grey & the keyboard alone will be the deciding factor to spend a little more on the pro model since they’ve been waiting so long

I think the big keyword people need to remember is testing

Testing new products is not a small feat and can take a very long time in which I believe these will come out next year, and the M2 max a year after that

Sticking with the almost 2-year-old M1 chip in an updated Macbook Air makes no sense and wasn't one of the major reasons Apple dumped intel was because their chip updates were so long. If Apple sticks with the M1 then Apple will be repeating a major Intel complaint so I don't see this updated Air not getting the M2 chip.
