Always thought a cool theory was that they were married to the cause and that's why they cut their ring finger off.

Branding them is just as conspicuous though. The only real difference is that you actually get to keep your finger, but that’s about it. It makes more sense for people like Arno, Connor, the Fryes, and the other people who came after Ezio, who just simply wear the blade without any sort of ritual scarification done to them. Or like Darius and Eivor, who nullified the risk of cutting off a finger altogether by just wearing it on top of their arms

I never understood how the governor of Havana didn’t notice Edward kenway was not an assassin right away because when he gave the group of templars the rings it would have been a dead give away not having his finger chopped off.

How hilarious is it that it took an item filled with Infinite knowledge to tell them to make the blade stick further out on the wrist could save them their finger, did no one joining ever think “why not make the hidden blade not cut my finger off?”

It wasn’t just a sign of dedication but also for practicality since let’s say your hunting your target and you are in the same position as Bayek but this time you don’t end up killing your target in the process of losing your finger. So now you are injured and can easily be killed and your target escapes.

The lore is a bit muddled. I think AC2 is to blame with Leo's "no longer requires a sacrifice." It was the Creed that required, not the blade. Aya showed Bayek how use it without cutting his hand. Altaïr used it that way in the original game. Although he did have the blade going through the gap on 2 occasions. After the, I think, 3rd chat with Al Mualim where he gets his hidden blade back he fires the blade through the gap and if we press the button to equip the hidden blade blade when it's already equipped he will fire it normally then close his hand
