I believe our company is probably the only one in our area actually doing heat load calculations. Every other company in our area goes into a house, counts up the registers, and divides by 4. That is the tonnage they install. Customers are always wondering why we are measuring their windows and checking the insulation in the crawl space and attic when every other estimate only took like 30 minutes to complete.

When it comes to replacing a gas furnace with an air-to-air heat pump, I wanted to understand whether my existing ducts could be used.
I learned a lot about why the existing ducts might not be suitable. And if fixing the ducts would be a major job, I'll look into installing a ductless split system instead.
The lower efficiency of an air handler is another reason that ducts suck. So it pays to understand why ducts are not the greatest old-school tech.
If I do get a split system, I could abandon the ducts, or tear them out and reclaim some ceiling height in my house.

Great video! I don't know why 9 out of 10 guys say my existing AC duct work would be fine for heat pump. QUESTION Should the placement of ceiling grills/registers be changed when switching from AC only to a heat pump? Thanks!

What's the best method for checking duct leakage? We offer Aeroseal but the modern customer is skeptical about a lot of things you tell them. What's the best way to measure duct leakage on a maintenance call?

Hmmm.

Responsibly avoiding responsibility, or irresponsibly assuming responsibility?

10:03 nice offer/decline, so maybe some of both?

chris - should you always insulate supply ducts inside conditioned space (esp under first floor? if so, what R around that duct ? what about insulting return ducts within conditioned space ? overkill ?

My central AC is 15 years old. My oil fired water baseboard is close to 25 years old. I am being proactive looking into a heatpump system for the near to intermediate future. I have had several people come in, but all I get is either 'use your current AC ducting' with a new heat pump or 'here's our recommendation for a split system.' The one reasonable exception was a recommendation for my current flex to be replaced by a tin/hard ducted system. But NO ONE does an analysis as you suggested. Can you recommend anyone in my area, even if I pay for an analysis & system recommendation from an expert 'heat pump consultant? Please attach any disclaimer on your end. Thanks!
