Gender Affirming Care with Jeff Main from Point of Pride

One half of one percent of Americans identify as a gender other than the one assigned to them at birth. And yet our state legislatures found the time to propose more than 550 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in 2023, with over 80 passed into law and nearly all focused narrowly on restricting trans rights. According to Human Rights Watch, since the Transgender Day of Remembrance in November of 2022, at least 33 transgender and gender non-conforming people have been killed in the United States. In 2024, state legislatures are on pace to drop even more legislation.

To help us wrap our minds around the challenges facing the trans community, I spoke with Jeff Main, executive director of Point of Pride, an organization dedicated to helping trans youth and adults access necessary, life-saving health and wellness services. Point of Pride’s vision is a world where trans and gender diverse people see a bright future for themselves—living their authentic truth.

I’m not for transing the kids. The rise in people identifying as transgender in recent years coincides with increased societal acceptance and visibility of diversity and lgbtq communities. It’s fair to raise questions about the extent to which being transgender is an intrinsic trait versus a response to our society’s overwhelming support for these communities. The growing normalization and romanticization of transgender identities is the reason more people, especially impressionable children and adolescents explore these identities due to societal encouragement rather than an innate sense of self. The increase in transgender identification is not solely a reflection of greater freedom to express one’s true identity but also a symptom of the left’s effort to emphasize and validate non-traditional gender identities. Thus, while the experiences of those identifying as transgender do exist, the broader rise in such identities is a reflection of the powerful influence of political narratives and the prevailing victim culture.

Where are all the transgender people over 30, that suddenly feel comfortable with society. And the other argument that I haven't heard rebut was why can you change genders but not race? Could y'all address these please

Sex is not assigned at birth, it is a physical reality that is observed. Gender is a social construct and no one is assigned a "gender" at birth; this is a dangerous obfuscation of nature vs. culture. Up until puberty children live in a mix of reality and fantasy, and much confusion is simply solved by passing through puberty (which is essential to long-term health). "Social affirmation" prior to puberty is child abuse, we should simply let children be children and support their journey through the process of puberty which is of course can create much confusion - but to shoe horn such confusion into a single "answer" is utter malpractice. Physical irreversible change (that includes puberty blockers and taking opposite sex hormones) should only allowed after the age of 18.
