I was 19. They played this beautiful piece at the funeral of Dad’s best friend, Uncle Shiang. Like hundreds of thousands of veterans who followed Chiang Kai-shek when he lost the civil war and fled to Taiwan, Uncle Shiang lost contact with his family and the loneliness lasted for decades. He died alone in Taiwan in early 80s. His dream of going back to the village to reunite with his wife and children was buried with him.

Since I was a child, this was one of the most precious pierces of music for me. I ever enjoyed each single note, the harmonics and dynamics and as it was always present I never asked for its name, wherefore I almost forgot about it, when I grew up. 30 years later I inherited my dad's classical LP collection, stumbled over this one and it captured all of my feelings at once. I was immediately brought back to my childhood, all the pictures, smells and impressions and am so grateful for Dvořáks beautiful gift of eternity! Now I am playing this record each day and enjoying my 2 yo son, being captivated and amazed by this lovely music - just like me back in the days.

I remember playing this piece back in high school and this was one of the few pieces where I was perfectly happy to be a trumpet player sitting in the back there just to count rests and listen.

Heavenly. One of the finest versions of the 2nd movement on YouTube.

I get a little weepy almost any time that I hear this moment. Those soft opening brass chords are just magic. Like time travel to this New World.

Soul searching music. Reaches deep. Wonderful performance. First heard this 67 years ago when I was 20, alone in a forces barrack room on a Saturday night. Always overwhelming.Never fails.

Since I was young my mother always hum this tune whenever shes having a good mood. We’re Chinese and we don’t usually listen to classical music. I had no idea what the tune is and where she heard it from. But today I found out it’s Dvorak. Amazing!

A classic example of "less is more"! That 7 note motif at the start, echoed at the end - it gets me, every time. So simple, yet so powerful and so moving.
What a wonderful performance by all concerned!

The passage for solo strings, at 13:09, never fails to make me weep. The cæsuræ are incredibly affecting, as if the singer has been choked by emotion and is unable to continue. Heartrending.

This is one of the memorable track in Civ 5. It plays when you reach industrial age. Magnificent composition by Dvořák.

Oceňuji i dobrou kvalitu technickou záznamu. Zdravím z Rakovnicka v České republice - a slzy tečou.

I remember when I was listening to this part with my parents... So many years before... Immortal music from an immortal composer...

Bellissima la sinfonia. Insuperabile la direzione di Celibidache. Grazie per sempre maestro.

What a beautiful piece of music! It is one of my favorites. :) I am also loving the comments left on this video in different languages from people in different countries all around the world. Music brings human beings together! I think this is something we should hold on to, as a species. Who knows what the future will bring for us? We may need something like this to help get us through it. Peace and love from the USA. <3

At 14:28, the strings come in too fast, and Celibidache gives this little adjustment with his hand and taps the baton as a "follow my tempo" rebuke. Wonderful control and pacing throughout.

And can we appreciate for a moment how concentrated and focused the EH player looks the whole entire time? Like, when the other oboists aren’t playing: *being bored, licking their reeds, thinking “when do I get to play?”*

EH player: *looks straight forwards, occasionally glances to the people who are playing, holding his instrument ready for any occasion*
