TV Shootout - Here's The 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗩 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 as Voted by Experts in A Blind Test

Our 2023 TV shootout between the LG G3, Panasonic MZ2000, Samsung S95C & Sony A95L.

All competing TVs were 55 inches in screen size, and were calibrated in SDR and HDR modes to the common standards used within the film and broadcast industry, perceptually matched to a Sony BVM-HX310 dual-layer LCD mastering monitor. Thanks to Mr Maciej Koper who flew in from Poland to help with the calibrations.

All the TVs were masked, so the 13 video professional judges (mostly from TV & film production company Fulwell73) didn't know which TV was which when scoring different picture attributes.

Thanks to Fulwell73 for letting us use their outstanding facility for the shootout. The results neither represent the opinions or views of the company, nor do they constitute the endorsement of any individual TV brand, since the judges didn’t even know which TV was which throughout the voting process.

The uncalibrated category was such a boss move! Thank you for thinking of 90%+ of users.

This is arguably the best honest TV-shoot without bias..
Again Vincent has proven why he is the master of TV-reviewing!

I'm glad Vincent changed the format and shows the scores for all the categories on all TVs instead of just a summary of 1st and 2nd place which was not that useful. Major improvement

Probably your best score sheet presentation to date, I really liked that you showed the shootout footage with the scores at the bottom. Well done shootout

There is one *flaw* although you just say it's a weakness that really can't be overcome without a lot of effort and energy and likely expense. The displays should be randomized for location between tests. I suspect as the shootout went on, bias starts to develop towards certain sets that stayed in a certain spot. Judges develop suspicion of what is what and that can sway perceptions. Again I think you did a tremendous job and am grateful for the results. Well done Vincent!

Quantum TV can learn a thing or two from Vincent about reviewing TVs instead of his incessant and insufferable bashing of Sony TVs in almost all his videos.

This is an excellent non-biased shootout. All the facts are presented brilliantly here - so well done to Vincent and the reviewers!
For myself, I have just purchased an LG G3 65 inch - as I couldn't justify paying the extra 1500 Francs for a Sony A95L. I am very happy with the TV and it's a massive step up in quality from the LG C1 77 inch I had before.

Keep up the good work Vincent!

great work, thank you!

A possible source of bias, but impractical prob to correct, is that the TVs look to be in the same physical position across tests. So an early positive or negative impression in the test might color the opinions on later clips. Theoretically I think they should be shuffled each time the judges leave the room, and be hopefully sufficiently masked that they coudn't even see which one was which. But that sounds impractical and I'm not sure there even is any observable trend of that kind in these scores anyhow.

I would like to express my personal gratitude to the participants who demonstrated exemplary honesty in evaluating televisions, adopting a scientific approach akin to a blind test. I also wish to extend my thanks to the University of Bordeaux and the Bordeaux region, not only for their academic contributions but also for their exceptional wines!

Yes, finally, the score table we've been wanting! Thank you Vincent. Absolutely gutted the 908 wasn't available for this test, ridiculous Philips were so late to release this year.

If you've already bought your TV today on sale before watching this video, and it's one of these four, go ahead and stop watching it now. There's a 75% change you did not buy the "best" one, and a 25% chance you bought the "worst".

Enjoy your TV as even the worst of this bunch is still the best in the business. Unless you decided to have 2 or more TVs side-by-side in your living room, you'd never even notice the difference, and you'll be happy with any of these.

Same essential results here in the US Test with Value Electronics. I have some lingering thoughts and additional thoughts on the 8K television tests we did as well. But yes, the Sony is the best when taking all into account. But the good news with both tests producing similar results is nobody is crazy :)

This is why i bought a S95C, bang for the buck its the best high end TV right now. I only care how good it is for two months before i buy it and two months after i buy it. After that it is just my TV and my future bedroom TV. 👍

The Swedish calibrator "Laxpudding" (at SweClockers) says there is an important use case most calibrators are not looking into and that is how the TV performs with SDR content in a very dark room. He says that G3 calibrated at 100 nits will have a poor result compared to C3 at 100 nits. The TV must perform with HDR content as well as SDR content. What do you say about this?

Judging from left to right as 1 till 5 and Sony's Mastering Monitor as 3 in the middle: Watching this, i always love 5 the most and 1 the least.
Trying not to compare to the monitor but loving my eyes judging the tv's.
5 looks warmer and almost more red/purple and 1 looks cooler and more bluish and whiter.
5 looks like the monitor in colors the most.
The monitor looks the darkest.

With the LG G3 getting so close but being much cheaper one could argue it’s a better value proposition that is more attainable for most. Especially when considering its extended feature set.

I think variance would be a useful statistical metric to list in your scores. Giving us a metric of how closely the TVs performed to their average. Great work as always, my S95C is at 1248 hours to date and am still very happy with it!
