What a MAGNIFICENT rendition! Single breath on the longest coloratura passage with such ease and elegance, very few tenors have the breath control to pull it off. Even fewer can do this piece justice as Mozart intended. Simply stunning!
Improvised embellishments is absolutely allowed in Mozart! I'm so glad that JDF gave us such a unique embellished version, he may set a future trend for singing Mozart. Everything is so tastefully done. German music critic Jürgen Kesting has a wonderful article discussing JDF's use of ornamentation, "Die Freiheit zu verzieren". You will appreciate JDF's genius more after reading it!
I will also leave the words of Gregory Berg from tthe Journal of Singing: "Florez sings these arias with a fearless and even flamboyant use of ornamentation that one almost never hears in this repertoire. Purists are likely to balk at some of his choices, but they are a product of a keen and resourceful mind and always sung with expressive intent. The tenor is most audacious in "Il mío tesoro, " the aria from Don Giovanni that posed such technical challenges that Mozart was compelled to compose a different aria ("Dalla sua pace") to replace it when the work was first performed in Vienna. Most tenors find this aria to be back-breakingly difficult as Mozart wrote it, yet Florez compounds its challenges with ornaments that include additional roulades plus two high ?-flats and a high C. This would come off as shameless grandstanding if sung by a less refined tenor; in the hands of Florez, this is a performance for the ages, and one we could imagine Mozart himself heartily approving. At any rate, these are performances that will surely inspire discussion and debate on how Mozart's vocal music is most effectively sung."
