This was a rather shallow investigation of TeX and LaTeX. One of TeX's goals was to be extendable. Wolfram's syntax is good and easy to implement for the known-cases, but adding characters that weren't there before would be quite difficult.
TeX on the other hand, works far more generally. Sub/superscript, for example, work on any characters, even if you've added them yourself. This is the power of the traditional typesetting approach which wolfram's syntax lacks, as you have to define the attributes of a character yourself.
