Scotland are OUT of Euro 2024 after late heartbreak against Hungary. Whether it was a lack of ambition from Steve Clarke, or a lack of quality from his players, it's an enormous missed opportunity for this Scotland side and one that will feel all too familiar for their fans. Adam Clery picks through the bones of both the result and the campaign, to work out exactly where it went wrong.

This video is actually a compliment to Rossi and Hungary - not that they were amazing, but they got it right and totally nullified Scotland who had been semi-decent against the Swiss

short answer - we are shite at football

In response to your Clarke defending - you show me any other manager who in 2 games where they need a goal and a win, sits their country's top goalscorer and multiple player of the season award winner, on the bench?! Clarke ruined Scotland's chances by sticking with blind loyalty to players who are not and have not performed for some time...

I suppose it would be a much shorter video if he said "they're shite"

Have to say it was a perfect game plan from Hungary, even with the penalty, Hungary still looked more like scoring in those last 10 or 15 minutes

I don't even like football and here I am watching this guy every chance I get.

Here's my interpretation: in the real tournament opposing teams are more likely to adjust to the opponent, while in qualifying they tend to just play their preferred system.

"It's a penalty!" Cut to still of the Scottish player with a handful of Hungarian shirt before contact is made.

I wonder why Shankland didn't get more minutes in the tournament. The question is also why Conway did not get a single minute. I think he could have brought something different up front.

Thanks Adam. You've made me understand football so much better. More and more often I find myself commenting things during the games now, and I watch you back and find you saying the exact same thing. Esp on this one

If Scotland would have get the penalty for that move, then Hungary should have get 2 at least on this match.
One for Botka and one for Varga's knockout, topped with a red card!

The referee was inconsistent at best, Hungary was struggling from bad decisions too.

Am I the only one thinking swapping Scott and John around, take Adams off for Armstrong a game or two earlier 😂 we would of been solid

It wasn't a penalty, the scottish forward was grabbing the Hungarian's shirt and jumped in front of him... he pulled the Hungatian down... he was looking to get a penalty, that's why it wasn't given

Not mentioning Hungary's potential penalty situation (that elbow charge on Endre Botka's head in the first half) just makes your own penalty request silly. That foul was way more obvious and it actually warranted a penalty kick.

NEVER A PENALTY!

Armstrong takes a bad first touch, tries to hold up the ball to give himself more time, pulls on Orban's shirt so hard he pulls Orban into himself which is what causes the collision and went down looking for a penalty

It was never a penalty, accept it already… and rather talk about, why wasn’t the penalty given for Hungary when Varga was clearly got K.O.-d by the Scottish goal keeper!

Scotsman here. Great video!

Appreciate the expert confirmation that we're absolute rubbish, injuries impacted the team selection, and Hungary were smarter than Scotland with their tactics.

As the game + data shows: If the team does not play the ball forward, get into the penalty box, take shots at goal, or undertake anything resembling attacking play in the final third, it's unlikely a win will ever arrive.

And of course, having zero luck at all times is Scotland's constant, ditto with the PK. Any other nation on the planet, that's a penalty all day long, they score, and victory is set.

But its Scotland, so no.

Also, if we'd have got the PK, we'd have to score that PK too. Anyone thought about how that was going to happen?

Regardless, I love you but its the same old Scotland. Namely, shite. The disappointment continues.

Even if we'd been given a penalty we'd probably have passed it back.

Hungary are a very decent international side, if you look at their record over the last 2 years I’d say they’ve underperformed so far. Scotland on paper just aren’t good enough for this level, it’s as simple as that. The only Scottish player who plays regularly at the top level is a left back. Hungary might not be blessed with individual talent but they have Szoboslai who is head and shoulders above anything Scotland have in an attacking sense.
