The Unholy Night (1929) Boris Karloff

​The Unholy Night (1929) is a pre-Code mystery film directed by Lionel Barrymore. Set in a foggy London, the story follows Lord Montague, a World War I veteran who narrowly escapes an attempted strangulation. He soon discovers that several of his former comrades from the Gallipoli campaign have been murdered under similar circumstances. Scotland Yard detective Sir James Rumsey assembles the surviving members of their regiment at Montague's mansion to uncover the identity of the killer. As tensions rise, a séance reveals Lady Efra, the daughter of a deceased officer, orchestrated the murders to inherit her father's fortune, manipulating Major Mallory to carry out her plan. The film concludes with Mallory's tragic intervention during the revelation.

The Unholy Drunken Cops is more like it. Odd movie. Disappointed Boris Karloff wasn't the main feature. Then again, this was two years before playing the monster in Frankenstein made him a famous name in films.
