Оfficially adopted by the Soviet Army in 1970 (deliveries of serial self-propelled howitzers since 1971).

The very first amphibious self-propelled howitzer in history (and still one of very few in the entire world) and also one of, if not the first one to feature NBC-protection as standard equipment.

All in all, the 2S1 was a real breakthrough for evolution of artillery, together with its "sister", the 2S3 Akacija (to be fair, like many other combat vehicles which emerged from the Cold War-era USSR) and is today still a very potent weapon, of course - which the unfortunate War in Ukraine has now proven multiple times (and on both sides).
