The Rise and Fall of Circuit City

Circuit City grew to be one of the largest electronics retailers in the U.S. at some point. It was the best performing stock in the 80s, delivering more than 9,000% returns to shareholders. Its stores were carrying all the electronics one could think of. So, how come such a big name declare bankruptcy in 2008? Let’s dive in.

I worked there in 1998 and 1999 in car audio. Commission is the way to go for sure if you want good salespeople. I was making about $20/hour or so, which back then for a 20 year old was pretty good!

Worked at a store in Springfield NJ. They talked about the price match plus 10 percent. I never seen that happen. Managers would let people walk out of the store.

First channel I've seen that mentioned DIVX, such a colossal loss of money for the company. All the devices had to be made specifically for DIVX (internet connection, payment ability etc), for a device that was ONLY sold at CC.

Circuit City and Best Buy always seemed in competition with each other, and I thought they would be like that for a long time, it was kind of unexpected they would fall off so fast.

When you drop commissions on a salesforce you will loose. I worked for Currys here in England for almost 10 years. In the winter of 2006 we had a meeting to say head office had decided to halt salesman commissions. I and many others left. If you don't pay commission you get clerks.

That CEO was an idiot then. The best part about circuit city was there employees. I was pretty good with audio but also learn lots of tricks from their audio sales people. Like the car audio guys actually competed in car audio competitions. They knew their stuff. The most valuable part of circuit city was those commissioned people. I would want a piece of equipment. After talking it over with them. I knew exactly what I wanted. No pressure. Those dudes knew how to show off good products and walk away and let you drool over it. When you have knowledgeable people scaling is easy. Not like going to a Best Buy. My god most of them couldn’t install an OS. Typically whatever a Best Buy employee tells you, it’s wrong.

I always thought for most of my life Circuit City with some sort of like amusement park
