I have made hundreds of thousands of rings for Tiffany & Co. during my career there. I made rings out of platinum, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and sterling. White gold and platinum do NOT look the same. White gold is very similar to how sterling is white. Platinum is grey metallic. It is not white in color. Both can have a very lustrous chrome like or mirror like polish but white gold has a much higher reflectivity index than platinum has. Any jeweler or anyone who has made a large amount of things out of each of those materials can spot the difference easily. That said, I highly recommend platinum if you can afford it. Platinum is slightly less rare that gold but often holds its' value better due to use in manufacturing. But the biggest advantage is that platinum will hold it's polish even better. White gold scratches very easily almost like sterling does. It gets dull fast and every time you polish it you lose a little. Platinum holds it's polish very well and so you don't have to polish it as often so you don't lose as much metal from polishing over the years. And it is one of the toughest materials you will ever come across. This is why they like to use it for prongs. .
