The pineapple. Sweet, juicy, and kind of painful. What is it about this tropical fruit that seems to bite us back?

The most astounding thing I've learned about the pineapple is that it's a bromeliad, a very interesting sort of plant that doesn't need roots to sustain itself. While not at all parasitic, they can grow in trees, rocks, crappy soil, anywhere their leaves can catch and hold water.

pineapple is my favorite fruit. On a cruise with my family when I was in middleschool, I had my first prolonged experience with all-you-can-eat pineapple. I ate so much I left my tongue raw and after a few days, I was barely able to taste anything for the rest of the cruise lol

It's worth noting that canned pineapple and fruit cup pineapple has been heat treated such that the bromelain no longer functions. It's only *fresh* pineapple that eats you back.
This distinction is also why you can't use fresh pineapple with jello, the bromelain just slices up the gelatin, but canned works fine.

this is also why you can't make pineapple jello with actual pineapple, and why it makes great meat tenderizer

Scishow: Pineapples eat you back.
Me: Ah, there it is. The daily reminder that the world I live in is a bleak hellscape.

Funny how I just finished eating pineapple a couple of hours ago and decided my mouth can’t handle the “acid” burn. Enzyme, huh? I love the things you learn on this show. You have one of the best channels on YouTube.

One of the few things I actually learned on an old TV show. On classic Hawaii 5-0 the killer had no fingerprints so they ended up tracking him down at a pineapple processing facility where he worked and then explained that having his hands constantly in contact with the pineapple juice all day while he was cutting them up ate away his ridges.

Pineapples and peaches are my all-time favorite fruits. But at least peaches aren't playing a game of "who'll digest who first".

The first time I bought a fresh pineapple (as opposed to pre-processed) I ate the whole thing(minus outer skin and leaves) in one sitting, by the end my lips were literally bleeding...worth it.

My brain: well well well then let's find out!

Pineapple is an excellent meat tenderizer. You can use the scraps from after cutting up a fresh one, blend that and pour it onto a meat. I do it with cheap cuts. Works fairly well.

I ended up with bromelain poisoning after a competitive eating of two whole pineapples, as well as a mild stomach ulcer. Enjoy, but not too fast!

As a dentist, I can vouch that already for decennia, we recommend the eating of fresh pineapple to cure aphts - sores. It helps at least in some of the cases, and without the negative sideeffects of some man-made cures. This is the first time I learn of the - or at least possible - explanation. great!

Well, I guess I've been kinda saved from pineapples' hunger by mixing it with passion fruit and mango when I want a tasty juice... seriously. Try it. Best juice ever.
