How to Make Curves in Wood

⚙️ SHOW NOTES - EPISODE #185: There are many ways to curve wood, but one of the most fun is also rooted in an Eighteen Century furniture technique called Bricklaying. Although it should be avoided on the basketball court, bricklaying is perfectly at home in the woodworking shop. In fact, using this approach, you can be sawing out classic curves. In this episode I show you a few variations and my methods for easily making curves in wood. And did I mention it’s fun too?!

I’m working on 12 Bull nose edge sunburst tables at 40” diameter. I have one sample now and 12 pieces bricked up ready to go. I am going to cut them in a CNC router. This video was super helpful for the bricking process! Thanks

Great video. LOVE that bandsaw technique for large rings.
One can also set up a template to cut the inside and outside curves of each segment after they have been cut to the proper angle and length. Then glue them up as usual. The resulting ring will be easy to true up.

I worked at a millwork shop but we would rough cut the radius glue them together and would make solid crown

For the smaller one, there's that rope puzzle with a washer. The rope goes through the washer and seems trapped. But if you bend the rope you can remove it from the ring. Could do the same with the band saw blade, the put the blade on your wheels and cut it. Probably time consuming but better than the jigsaw slipping and messing up all that work.
