Did you know that the famous Royal Airforce aerobatic team, the red arrows, in standard formation consist of 9 planes?
But in 2011, one of the planes fatally crashed at the Bournemouth Air Festival. For the remainder of the year, the rest of the team flew the program with only eight planes, leaving a demonstrative gap in their formation in memory of their lost colleague.

Now you know! Like and follow for more aviation facts every day.
I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
Wishing you all the best!

this is a tradition in military aviation... you can see it in the missing man formation 😊

Something similar happened to the Canadian Snowbirds. During a practice before an airshow, there was an accident between two jets. No one was injured or killed but the Snowbirds did their formations with one less jet for a while afterwards. The Snowbirds are flying with 9 jets again instead of 8.

We love you John eggins. A true hero. He could have crashed into a village but he swerved and crashed into the ground instead. True hero

As someone who lives in Bournemouth I can tell you they have put up a lovely memorial statue at the cliff by the beach, I can't wait for the airshow this year though

I was amazed the day one of the red arrows ejected over Brighton beach in the 80s. Especially watching the pilot walk out of the sea.

I'm pretty sure that arrow is is the wrong place. The missing plane is on the other side in the last row

I was at the bournemouth air festival in 2011

That was the sensible thing to do. I applaud honouring one missing element even if the formation is not perfect.

Down at Bournemouth beach there is a memorial of the pilot who died during the crash

That was not the main reason... Simply nobody can jump in dispaly team in middle of season. They get display license as a team, so replacing somebody takes few months of training and preparation.
