The movie instead of using the mask as the motivation has an off handed line from Decker about killing breeders. He has a purification sort of subtext. I just assumed killing the nightbreed tied in with that motif. They are impure to him.

There is also the 198 ultimate cabal cut on YouTube that brings the communication with the mask into the film.

Great video. I read Cabal in 2000/2001 after listening to the Midian album and learning that the band's inspiration came from the book. I've been waiting for a sequel since then...

Great review/analysis! So, clives pacing is again, very good in this book. You pronounced baphomet right btw lol. Yea this book is super fun, and I can read it pretty dang quick, maybe because of the pacing.

Love the movie Nightbreed! I wish the movie was more successful than it was because then maybe we could have gotten more from this world but the studio wrecked that unfortunately by editing the movie into a slasher film that happens to have some fantasy stuff in it. I think the movie could have gotten way more praise at the very least if the studio just left it be and what we now know as the director’s cut was released as the original.

I remember when I read it it was a hardcover that was a collection of stories. One of the stories was called Cabal, so it does get confusing. I have seen some of the comics, and read the book never got around to the film though.

I think I liked the movie better. Usually it's the other way around. Neither is Clive's best but they're both worth checking out.

You know the Mask is played by David Cronenberg in the movie. .?.?
Everybody that has read this Novella, and Watched the movie has been waiting for a sequel.
When I say everybody....I mean Me😁
Werewolves, and some Vampires are shapeshifters. So not all wizardry. IMO

Read the book as I heard about what cut from the film and wanted to fill in the blanks.

Having read the book and seen 4 different versions of nightbreed there’s no massively different stories going on that were cut out in editing.
Whether you read the book or watch one of the many versions there’s not too much difference in the narrative. There’s more character development in the 3 hour version but it’s not particularly good.

It’s an ok book and an ok film (directors cut). Me as a teenager thought there was a bona fide classic waiting to be unearthed but that’s not the case.

A lot of the cut footage deserved to be cut. Some poorly acted and shot scenes that needed to be left on the cutting room floor.
