I just purchased a nutsert tool, along with a huge supply of nutserts, never understanding that the nuts has to be used according to thickness of material! I was under the assumption that they were knurled to expand (or 'swell' if you will) to grab the diameter of the hole. I'm glad that you posted this! Use of the nutsert tool is obviiusly somewhat more tedious than one might think.

Thank you for sharing this information! I'm sure I'm not the only dummy out here! Lol Now, to shop for assorted nutserts that vary in thickness or depth requirements. If you have links for where to purchase such assortments, please advise. Thank you again.

It would be useful if on the nut-set packet or box it clearly states 1. the range of material thickness applicable for the nut-sets (and in plain English - not in engineering terms) and 2. that not using the correct sized nut-set can cause damage to the tool which is not covered by warranty due to user error.

When I insert rivnuts into thicker material, i countersunk the back first, providing I have access to the back.

The instructions that come with the tool suggest that it’s adjusted for different thicknesses by controlling the amount of compression. ie. It’s not always say 6mm compression.
I think the use of specific rivnuts depending on target thickness is a good idea, but can be very expensive for home workshops.

I recently had to buy new alloy-cast levers for my Laser Tools Heavy Duty Riveting Kit RivNut Tool Set 3736LT, because they bent.
I made the mistake that I thought the long levers needed a lot of travel to seat the Rivnut - they don't - so I carried on cranking on the levers.
The new replacement levers had more reinforcing metal in the castings, making them much stronger.
Even the best tools can be badly designed, with alloy castings being used instead of machined steel.

Great video, it's not rocket science, they are an excellent tool, mine has done a lot of work and only ever needs a touch of machine oil and popped back in it's box.

I can’t find info on how to find rivet nuts for thicker material. I want to use rivet nuts for a project using about 1/8 to 3/16 steel and/or aluminum and I know the standard rivet nuts are not made for this.

Any help with how to shop for what I need?

Can tell he just works in the office and not on the tools.

Of course this is an informative video, but anyone with half a brain should realize they can just tap the workpiece at the end haha.

You can put too much pressure on the nut rivet gun and it will pull out and ruin the threads on the rivet nut. Then you got to drill it out and try again.
