Barry Cryer recalls This Is Your Life

The writer and comedian Barry Cryer was surprised by Michael Aspel in November 1994 for the television programme This Is Your Life.

In an exclusive interview for the BigRedBook website recorded in May 2015 Barry Cryer recalls his memories of appearing on the programme.

📺 This Is Your Life was one of the most popular programmes on British television, spanning almost 50 years of broadcasting, with over eleven hundred editions produced between 1955 and 2003.

📕 Part biography, part celebration, the programme’s premise was simple – an unexpected surprise for an unsuspecting subject, as the host opened the Big Red Book to reveal a life story told through a reunion of family and friends.

I met Barry Cryer by sheer chance on a commuter train out of London a few years ago. I asked about his meeting Laurel and Hardy in Nottingham in the 1950s when they were on tour and the conversation was away. He got so wrapped up in his subject he almost forgot to get out at his station. Such a pleasure to have had a conversation with him.

Barry is one of the great comedians / scriptwriters, he's been around forever, knows everyone, has written for everyone, lovely to see him again .

Great comic writer - and performer. I watched the broadcast - all too short - and less pleasingly reflected: every one of those people is now dead - apart (I think) from Michael Aspel. And I miss every one of them.
