Glad to see new videos coming on your channel!
Damn, that popping sound... I wish I could build a birch bark canoe someday... 😞🌳🚣🏾‍♀️

Birch bark is great stuff. Just watched a fellow stripping some for a canoe, he used part of a 5 gallon bucket as the spud to slip the bark off the log, nice idea, not necessary for small projects.

If you cut a three-quarter inch square on the tree you can test if the bark is ready to pop.

You can remove some bark but if you take too much it'll damage the tree.
The bark serves as a protective layer for the tree, shielding it from pests, diseases, and environmental stressors. When bark is removed, it can expose the underlying cambium layer, which is essential for the tree's growth and nutrient transport.
Bark serves as a waterproof overcoat for the tree, helps prevent loss of water from the tree by evaporation, acts as a barrier against attacks by insects and diseases, insulates the tree from drastic temperature changes, and in some instances, protects the tree from fire damage

Presumably, this does not harm the tree?
Not deep enough to affect the cambium layer?
What is the best time of year to do this and what are the most popular uses for it.
Thanks to anyone who replied ☺️

The rule of thumb used by First Nations peoples around the globe is never take more than 1/3 of the circumference of the tree, and it should heal and remain growing.

How thick does the bark need to be to be useful when making this with it?
