Our first tip: Be Creative. See the before view of this project – a ridiculously small little covered space right next to the door (which is a positive for an outdoor kitchen). We got creative and that is the tip - think outside of the box. We expanded with a covered structure which wasn't easy due to the window over the original covered area. We had to raise the window because of the roofline and add a Gable style structure there and bumped it out from their interior dining room. *Result: A new kitchen to walk outside and grill all seasons. A bar behind the grill, a TV, an extended outdoor living space with heaters and loads of ambiance.

Number two tip: Outdoor kitchens don't need to be huge even if you have the space. We added 4-feet-out in this property to give us the ability to build an outdoor kitchen right outside of the back door, enabling our client to grill Four Seasons. *Result: A little fireplace right next to the all-season outdoor kitchen so the family could head/cook outside all seasons. Outdoor kitchens don't need to be huge.

Tip Three: Use elements that are best for the space. We did not do a traditional grill her choosing a charcoal grill instead. It's a flat grill and works great for a barbeque. Notice an ice cooler (built in). Then we squeezed in a wood-fired pizza oven for pizza, bread, anything else you want to cook here (veggies, cinnamon rolls). Next a fireplace with wood bin. *Result: A custom kitchen grill area that works for this small space.

Our fourth outdoor kitchen: Here's another creative small kitchen island near the door. The homeowner wanted to grill all seasons, so we waterproofed the deck out of their master bedroom giving us the ability to step out dry and walk over to grill station. It’s on the same elevation as the hot tub under the pergola. Step down to be able to enjoy more of this space. A double-sided fireplace, a bar for the little ones, a bit further out is the pizza oven, and then a grand outdoor dining table under the pergola. The tip: you can have a small outdoor kitchen, but if you have to space - extend further to create purpose & destination. *Result: The main focal point starts with an outdoor kitchen right outside of the door.

Kitchen #5 packs a punch in a smaller footprint. Look at the before photo of this space. No room to add an outdoor kitchen let alone a bar. To accomplish one, we added another Gable to it with a long bar. The grill station has an outdoor refrigerator lots of counterspace, a kitchen sink - maximizing space in every way.

Create a small kitchen island: Here in kitchen #6: A small little detached outdoor kitchen with a cover. Adding posts and some support beams to extend the roofline – it becomes a quite simple structure, an outdoor detached kitchen with the grill station.

Next an outdoor kitchen with dual functions: A retaining wall right off the fence line with a busy road on the other side. We used a detached structure with a breezeway from their door so they could walk out to the structure all seasons. We added a fireplace, a bar, and a water feature to absorb the traffic sounds behind the wall.

Another idea for a small outdoor kitchen is maximizing every square inch of your space. We love this modern home where we tucked a grill into the corner and extended the bar from it. We love the contrast between wood and granite.

Creating an outdoor kitchen does not necessarily mean using a grill. Here we have an egg style smoker. There are many different styles on the market. Here we did a little bar island with the smoker in a compact space.

In our kitchen by the river is we were able to design a nice size with countertops to maximize the cook space. Because of their proximity to the River they were not able to go out any further so we rounded out the area into the side of the property. So in this small outdoor space, the kitchen became pretty good sized.

The last but not least - is an outdoor kitchen in a side yard side of a modern neighborhood. A grill station right under the pergola allowed us to maximize this small side yard. We used the homeowners’ grill and built an island around it creating a custom island plus refrigerator. We added the fountains at the end of the landscape, a fireplace wall, large dining table.
