I would've given him a hug & say I'm proud of him. Those 2 things would've changed everything. What a terrible father. The child needed a hug & to be told you care & that he is perfect the way he is. He didn't feel worthy because of Endeavor & that broke him, as a result the pain began to twist him & he couldn't cope thus becoming the villain Dabi. Had he given him love, attention & affection & he continued to use quirk then Endeavor could've paid for an item that protects him. The heroes got paid quite well. Plus Endeavor could've supported him despite him not being what Endeavor wanted. A child may not be what you want or expect & your other might but both need the love & affection as well as the stern behavior of a father. In many ways Dabi is just an angry, wounded kid slowly losing himself to the despair & pain.
