This is an extended scene where Dunbar rides off with Kicking Bird and a small group of warriors to scout the buffalo herd they'll be hunting. In the extended cut, a new scene is added to it at the beginning that shows Dunbar creepily staring at Stands With A Fist while she works before they leave.

This scene always gives me chills and bring tears to my eyes. It makes me sad to see how numerous the bison used to be and how much space they had to roam, compared to now. So much damage has been done to this beautiful earth.

About two years ago I got to visit Big Bend National Park with my girlfriend and it was the most beautiful land and sky I have ever seen. I just stood there many times during that trip….no cars, no noise, no people….just me and her, land and sky….it was perfect in everyway. How amazing for people of this earth to have had such sights once.

I like how Costner made sure to include a shot of the horses grazing after the ride. Just little touches like that make this such a great movie.

I read a story of a white rancher in the Dakotas who was sympathetic to the Indians. He set up a fenced in area with some of the few remaining buffalos some time in the 1890s so Indian men could do one last buffalo hunt, and the Indian women could prepare the buffalo hides and meat one last time.

Such an incredibly sad story!

I believe the Plains Indians, after obtaining horses from the Spanish to aid in their buffalo hunts, were the freest and happiest people who ever lived.
