Ready to take Indian Eves on the road to Tokyo 2020, Rani Rampal, captain of Indian women hockey team, is a force to reckon with. Under her leadership, the Indian team qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics against team USA in a two-leg match on November 1 and 2. Scoring India’s only goal in the second leg, Rani Rampal charged team India to victory in the game. India's success against top-ranked nations this year has instilled a new self-belief, the 25-year-old hockey player said. Want to know about her journey? Watch this video.
Considered one of the best women hockey players in the world, Rani player is well known as a striker, who often doubles up as mid-fielder. The skipper developed a passion for hockey while growing up in Shahabad Markanda, Kurukshetra district of Haryana. Her first tryst with the sport happened in 2003, after she started training at the Shahabad Hockey Academy under Baldev Singh, a recipient of Dronacharya Award. Her father was a cart puller and struggled to make ends meet; let alone affording a hockey stick, which was larger than her at the time.
But, nothing could deter her passion and spirit for hockey. She kept the fight head on. Eventually her family found a way to let her practise the sport. Rani first came to Junior Nationals in Gwalior and at Chandigarh School Nationals and she was later admitted into national squad. At the age of 15, she was the youngest player in the national team which participated in the 2010 World Cup. She scored six goals at the 2010 hockey world cup and was voted ‘Young Player of the Tournament’. She also holds the record for Indian hockey's youngest international debutant, aged 14. She made her senior year debut in the same year.
GoSports Foundation, sports non-governmental organisation, supported Rampal when she turned professional. During the Champion's Challenge Tournament in Kazan, Russia in June 2009, she powered India to a win by scoring 4 goals in the finals. She was also adjudged ‘The Top Goal Scorer’ and the ‘Young Player of the Tournament.’
After playing at 2010 Commonwealth Games and 2010 Asian Games, Rani was nominated in FIH Women's All-Star Team of 2010. She is the only Indian to be nominated for the FIH Women's Young Player of the Year Award, 2010. In 2013 Junior World Cup, Rani made India won its first ever bronze medal at the event. She was part of Indian hockey team when the team qualified for 2016 Rio Olympics after 36 years. She was honoured with Arjuna Awards in 2016, making one of her dreams come true. Rani also led the Indian women's hockey team as captain in 2018 Asian Games. Indian Eves won a silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games and Rani was India's flag-bearer for the closing ceremony of the games.
