The one-bump, two-bump discussion is bringing back some memories of when I was in a car accident last year. I was driving on my way to work behind two cars and a gravel truck. We took a bend going up the mountain, so the truck slowed to a crawl and we all ended up closer than I was comfortable with. Once we were going straight, I let the cars in front of me have a little room, but it turned out the gravel truck had to make another turn to get to the gravel company. It stopped to make its turn, and the two cars stopped behind it. I very nearly ended up hitting the cars, but thankfully braked in time to avoid a collision!

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the car behind me. They rear-ended me, and I pulled to the side of the road. After I got out of the car, I learned there was a third car behind them, so it was a 3-car collision. When EMS arrived, I distinctly remember them asking if I felt one bump or two bumps. I felt one bump. The car behind me collided with my car after it had stopped, and I used the momentum from the collision to pull over to the side of the road. The second car was struck by the third after I was struck, so I wasn't hit by that car.

The officer who came onto the scene told me up-front that I was not at fault for the accident. In fact, the driver that hit me didn't have their license! I feel a little bad, because the driver had two children with them, but thankfully no one was seriously injured. Have to imagine that driver got in some serious trouble, however.

On the bright side, my car suffered minimal damage, and the other driver's insurance paid a decent sum. Wouldn't want to call it a win, but any accident you can walk away from kind of is.

The bus had barely moved before the light turned orange, the bus had picked up so little speed that if the driver had just hit the brakes it would have been a gentle stop. Also, are the cops forgetting that turning traffic need to yield for straight on traffic?

Also, I might make an argument that the city might be partly responsible here. We can't see when the light turned green, but given that the two cars in front of the bus were pretty much at a stand still and just started moving, that green light seems to be WAY too short

A bit of bragging rights from when I was 18… I was visiting home after I graduated from boot camp and I was driving back to my parents house from the recruiting station (could do extra work so I didn’t have so much leave time before my next command). I was in the left lane doing the speed limit (probably over) and I saw a cop in front of me. At some point I was gaining on the police car, so I applied my brakes… slowed down, still gaining on him, so hit my bales a little harder… about 3 seconds later I was going maybe about 25-30 in a 55, I realized that the cop is at a complete stop! I just pushed my foot to the floor at that point but it was too late. I made impact. We were on a freeway, and he was trying to make a u-turn across a double yellow line. This cop had no brake light, no siren lights, i doubt this cop was even awake before the time of impact. Very minor damage to the rental car (I think the license plate was bent) and minor damage to the cop car. And because I was freshly out of boot camp, i was let go. I was told to just let my insurance company know that the car was in an accident. That was it. I’m pretty sure if I saw sirens lights, I would have moved over and slowed down faster if I couldn’t. How many people can say the hit a cop car, with a cop inside and not get a ticket?? 😁
