Embracing a Systems Engineering Approach to Agile at Scale

What if, instead of focusing on all the Agile practices, we started applying some of the things we know about systems engineering to help large companies become the kind of organization that can leverage those practices?

Instead of blindly performing the ceremonies of Scrum, what it we got super disciplined about how we decompose work and flow decisions through the organization? Craftsmanship and emergent design are great. But at some point, the ideation of features and requirements and the decisioning process looks a lot more like an assembly line in a factory than it does boutique delivery.

I love this concept and would love to hear more on this if possible!

Mike, you are right. Agile is basically for the team level only. Building large complex systems needs more than that. The software industry has given up on becoming an engineering discipline; perhaps for a good reason, perhaps not. But somehow it seems the industry has started all over and went full circle to the early days of building software. The agile principles and way of working are fine, much better than what we did 20 years ago when we wrote large documents with requirements, handed over to design etc., but it's not the complete story. We need more to build and maintain large complex systems and to manage dependencies and commitments. The agile community (often software engineers/coders ?) is getting more and more dogmatic and almost aggressive against things like SAFe. It's seems they just don't want to be bothered and "pure agile" is their safe room?

Take us all the way down this rabbit hole Mike.

Hi Mike, I like where you are going... You talked about a couple of books. Can you provide their names? I want to design an assembly line for a mid-size Insurance company.
