Joji jokes about Filthy Frank at live show (Laneway Festival Adelaide 2023)

At Joji's show tonight, the crowd started to chant "Filthy Frank", as they have done on occasion during his Australia Tour. Joji then joked that Filthy Frank was about to come out on stage, saying "here he comes", before pointing out two Filthy Frank/Pink Guy cosplayers in the crowd. Joji then segued into "Gimme Love". This is arguably the most Joji has ever acknowledged the Filthy Frank character since he ceased talking about him entirely around 2018.

I plan to upload more Joji content, including my 4K, front-row recording of pretty much the whole show shortly, so please subscribe if you're interested!

This was the Adelaide show of Laneway Festival 2023 (10th February).

FAQ, since I keep seeing the same comments get posted:

Q: Were Max and Chad at this show?

A: No, that was the Melbourne show. The show in this video was the Adelaide show, one day beforehand.

Q: Doesn't Joji not like when people bring up Filthy Frank?

A: So I see people say this all the time, with no evidence to prove their point, but I just want to say that I completely disagree. If he really was just acknowledging it to not seem rude, he would have done the bare minimum. But he not only joked about Frank coming out on stage, but pointed out not just one, but two cosplayers in the audience. And, he's done this at multiple shows now. That doesn't seem to me like someone who's trying to avoid talking about it at all costs.

Q: But you're wrong! He just didn't ignore it because he didn't want to be rude, but he actually doesn't like it!

A: At this show, he ignored tons of stuff that people yelled out, including almost the whole crowd telling him to do a "shoey" (see my full show video). If he wanted to ignore this, he could have handled it the same way.

Q: But people shouldn't bring it up at all!

A: At the end of the day, people can do what they want. Filthy Frank arguably kick-started his music career, and you can't just tell people to forget about it. Joji can then respond however he likes, including ignoring it, but he has chosen to respond in this way.

He also took that recent photo with Max and Chad, which clearly shows he has no issues embracing his past. I hope a Cold Ones episode with Joji does indeed come out, so we can put this idea of him avoiding all connections with Filthy Frank to bed.

All I need is him to say hey boss at least once at a concert and I’ll be happy

He’ll always be Francis of the Filth, no matter how hard he tries to hide it.

Gone, but not forgotten, Pink Guy will forever be with us, lurking in the dankest corners of our minds, smelling kinda weird and mumbling incoherently.

wish he would still play some of his pink guy songs live. A few of them are genuine bangers that really aren’t too over the top raunchy. Oh well.

It's cool that he embraces it. Never forgot what got him there

I love how the Pink Guy's arm covers his face. It's almost like Pink Guy split off from Joji and manifested a new body just so he can see himself perform live.

Imagine if eventually everyone dresses up as Pink Guy to Joji's concerts

Looks like old wounds are starting to heal. Hope he continues doing this little shoutouts to his past works because let's be for real, you can't really ever forget that stuff. It was legendary for a reason.

I think he's most likely glad that a lot of his old fans are still going out to his shows and supporting him even though he's on a completely different path now. They truly are fans of George Miller, not just Frank or Joji. He must appreciate that.

This is the good ending for "formerly edgy, now reformed" creators. I respect that about Joji a lot. No scrubbing himself of his former content, just letting it be a thing he used to do.

Big ups to joji, he really did seem burned out on the character and him being able to just laugh at the references and call outs from the audience is nice

It makes me feel warm how he’s not embarrassed or nervous to talk about filthyfrank. Love you Joji

It's so nice that people go to his show dressed as pink guy. From what i know his fanbase in the old days hated that he stopped doing comedy to chase a more serious music career, so having people from that era going to a joji show is like it came full circle.
They've been there from the start, they still like and want to support him

The way he settled the crowd by directing the attention onto other people was pretty clever
