Step back into the Viking Age and uncover the secrets of Glima, the ancient martial art that forged Norse warriors into legends. Known as the “Viking wrestling style,” Glima was more than just a sport—it was a survival skill. From the icy battlefields of Scandinavia to the bustling trade ports of the Viking world, this grappling-based martial art taught warriors how to dominate in close-quarters combat.

What is Glima?

Glima is an ancient Viking martial art that combines grappling, throws, joint locks, and foot sweeps. Unlike modern wrestling, Glima focuses on balance, timing, and leverage, enabling Viking warriors to overpower larger or stronger opponents. It was used both in friendly competitions and as a deadly tool in Viking raids and battles.

Why Did the Vikings Practice Glima?

The Vikings were not only fierce warriors but also practical athletes. Glima trained them to handle hand-to-hand combat, improve their physical fitness, and bond as a community. It sharpened their reflexes, enhanced their strength, and honed their survival instincts—making them unbeatable on the battlefield and in one-on-one confrontations.

How Glima Shaped Viking Culture

More than just a combat technique, Glima played a key role in Viking society. From settling disputes to preparing young warriors for combat, this martial art was woven into their daily lives. The principles of honor, discipline, and respect for one’s opponent were central to Glima, reflecting the Vikings’ code of ethics.

Modern-Day Glima: Preserving Viking Heritage

Today, Glima is celebrated as a cultural treasure, practiced in Scandinavia and around the world by martial arts enthusiasts and Viking history fans. It’s a living link to the Viking past, keeping their fighting spirit alive in the present day.

If you’re inspired by Viking training methods, Glima is a perfect way to improve your strength, agility, and combat skills. Whether you’re a martial artist, a history buff, or simply someone who wants to connect with Viking heritage, Glima offers a unique and challenging experience.

People in those days always fled north if they survived an invasion or fall of a country . The further north the harder to farm . Many diverse cultures ended up in the northern countries bringing theire culture and secrets with them . A huge melting pot . People really do not take that into account . Also vikings would take slaves during raids .
