MakeNoise STO | Sub-Timbral Oscillator

For some strange reason, I never made a video about the STO. I guess I always took it for granted, assuming nobody would be interested. But STO is an amazing oscillator and it neatly complements DPO, which can't do vari- timbre and doesn't feature a sub oscillator that can be triggered/gated on and off. With the new XPO on the horizon, STO would be a very powerful helper oscillator, because XPO - as powerful as it is - needs a modulator oscillator for serious FM.

Dude thank you for this! STO is an unsung hero for sure. I was really missing a waveshaped output before I got it. I pair it with my Brenso in a similar way as you do with your DPO, and this gave me a ton of great ideas.

I love the STO for clean and deep basses with the sine out, but it's also really nice for arpeggios and melodies into the LxD or Optomix and QPAS for some stereo imaging.

Just picked up the STO myself, s/h off eBay for not a lot. Very versatile module, very glad to have it in the case. Thanks for the ideas!

Cool to see the oscilloscope shot for the variable wave!

You commented you only got your first module 4 years ago, and here was me thinking you are a weather veteran of the MN shared system environment. Great to now know being new to the party, doesn't mean too late... I completed my shared system which includes a STO just last week.. I'm a little overwhelmed but cinematic laboratory has become my go to for inspiration and help..

Got 2 of them. The 3 output are really useful and I really love How it sound.

Great video Just bought one because of the UI and outputs. Another video amazing about it is the one where Walker is just using one STO !

So easy to overlook this simple but efficient oscillator. I need something like the Dixie2+ but with a different character. This seems like the answer! Thanks for the video.

Varishape out into Qpas its a dream combo. You can shape the harmonics with the shape knob and qpas will pick them out and accentuate them - depending on the frequency. It just sounds awesome.

Great video, and great timing. I bought a used STO this week to add to my B&G Shared System. It should be delivered tomorrow. I just wish I could have gotten one with a matching black & gold panel, like yours. They're much harder to find!

STO was my first VCO, and i use it in nearly every patch i make. I have gotten a few others since then, but STO remains my favourite!

It's awesome seeing the STO getting some love!

Is there any advantage to using the STO over something like a Dixie II+? It has a variable waveform out instead of a bunch of different waveforms to choose from, but you could get that with a crossfader or something.
I'm curious because it's had to hear people play enough of a single oscillator in isolation to really hear how the character is the same or different than another one.

how do you compare the STO with the DPO? I am wondering if it makes sense to get a STO if I have the DPO. Cant find any comparison. where do you see the differences?

STO! I've got one patched 3-ways right now.

The varishape is so musical on the STO. So much you can get out of this guy.

I strongly disagree on Bug's oscillators, they are chaotic and barely controllable, sure, but they sound great, especially on the Make Noise's v1 Bug. I use them a lot for percussive stuff and in noisy feedback patches
