for those who don't understand:

In Finland "Presidentti" is a coffee brand and it's more expensive than "Juhla mokka", so for a gift you can buy "presidentti" coffee.

In Finland, my aunt and her husband won 1.2 million euros in the lottery 12 years ago. Both continued to work as usual. My aunt as a hairdresser and her husband as a warehouse worker. They paid off their mortgage but did not buy anything extravagant. They invested nearly all of their winnings. Later, when they needed to make purchases, they opted for better quality, which does not always mean the most expensive. Otherwise, their lives have remained much the same as before. Now, however, they have the advantage of not having to stress about finances.

Presidentti coffee? In this economy? Even as a lottery winner? Hot damn.

Finland also has anonymous lottery winners and its not considered untrustworthy practice to shield the winners from every scammer and criminal in the country.

Kell’ onni on, se onnen kätkeköön,
kell’ aarre on, se aarteen peittäköön,
ja olkoon onnellinen onnestaan
ja rikas riemustansa yksin vaan.

Ei onni kärsi katseit’ ihmisten.
Kell’ onni on, se käyköön korpehen
ja eläköhön hiljaa, hiljaa vaan
ja hiljaa iloitkohon onnestaan.

A man won in lottery. He told his neighbour and soon the whole town knew it. He got some three girlfriends. After some months somebody asked: "How much did you actually win?"
- " 37 euros."

10 years or so ago a family friend of mine won ~20 million €, all he bought was a Ford Transit and a new pair of skis. He works as a butcher to this day.

I know someone who won alot, and lives pretty much exactly like nothing happened. And I'd do the same, well I'd propably have my illnesses treated better if I had the funds because being healthy is worth more than any money(I speak from experience).

I've visited Finland once. The people were lovely friendly and warm. They have high EQ and it's so easy to communicate with the service staff. Finland has a very calm and peaceful vibe which I appreciate. ❤

My dad always told me not to increase spending even when your income increases. "The key to wealth is little spending, not big income" as grandpa put it. Guess the same would/should apply to lottery winnings as well lol.

Edit:
For some additional context: I grew up dirt poor. My parents had to choose between buying food for the family or getting gas for grandparent's car to go to work. This advice doesn't come from any sort of place of privilege, it comes from a place of necessity.

My parents worked hard - and smart - to get to the point where having to choose between gas and food isn't the monthly/weekly question anymore, and to figure out what worked for them financially. It took them 15+ years to get to that point, and for my dad to confidently teach my siblings and I how to budget and manage our finances.

I just wanted to share the tip of the iceberg of what my old man has taught me. There's obviously a lot more to finances than what my og comment has included.

I once arranged to buy shit ton of Presidentti coffee from sale at K-marketti (limited to 2 per customer) for my dad, cut a christmas tree shape from plywood and used douple sided tape to attach them to it before wrapping it all up... I dont think I've ever put that much effort to a single gift. Was years worth of coffee. Yes, everyone with K+ card bought them separately, it was important he knew it was on sale when bought

You only get PRESIDENT coffee during holiday or funerals and weddings.

We inherited a lot of money and bought exactly nothing with it. Instead, we donates half of it ti charities. We still live in a rented one-room apartement because we like it here and still don't own a car, but boyyyy does it give your security in life if you have funds to rely on. I come from poverty and that feeling was a whole new experience.

I was studying in Finland (I’m originally from Poland) and can confirm that. Finns are very calm and hold their emotions inside. They also don’t show off. ❤
