For the last 50 years our systems in the United States have been designed to maximize the use of fossil fuels. On purpose. As a child I lived through the era where every metal household tool, toy or appliance was eventually replaced by a plastic one. I saw the dentist and doctor switch from metal supplies sterilized in an autoclave, to plastic implements packaged in plastic. I saw the efficient trolley system dismantled so everyone had to own a car for mobility. I saw the hysterical enthusiasm drummed up by the fashion industry for the new plastics in synthetic fabrics, naugahyde, vinyl. Do "the connections between the elements of the system determine it's behavior" ? In this case it seemed the capitalist system funneled money toward fossil fuel profits which were used then to change the structures and systems under which we lived, in order for them to amass even more wealth and have ever more ability to arrange our world for their profit.

don't focus on personalities. Most leaders make rational decisions given their inputs. Change the inputs and rational people will change their decisions.
