The economics of the 4th trimester | Dr. Sonal Patel | TEDxOcala

The 4th trimester is three months after the birth of a baby more commonly referred to as postpartum. By relabeling it as the 4th trimester, society, science, and the medical community can better understand the massive changes mothers are going through while newborns are adjusting to the world outside the womb. The most alarming data in discussing the 4th trimester is the fact that we are losing more moms during this period than the first three trimesters combined. Dr. Sonal Patel explores the economic impact of losing moms during the 4th trimester, a solution that can reduce maternal mortality, and thus positively impact our national economy. Dr. Patel's journey started as a moment of exhaustion in her own 4th trimester courtesy of her 4 sons and now is creating a movement of truly understanding the socioeconomic impact of maternal mortality. Sonal Patel is a board-certified pediatrician, neonatologist, and breastfeeding specialist. Born in Lucknow, India, her family moved to Omaha, Nebraska when she was 9. She attended Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, from 1995-1999. She studied medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center graduating in 2003. She did her pediatric training at LSU in New Orleans, Louisiana. Thereafter, she pursued neonatology starting at LSU and finishing at Tufts University in Boston. She moved to Denver in 2009 and joined Denver Health as a Neonatologist.

Through her professional and personal experiences, she noticed the gaps in postpartum care in Colorado. In 2017, she founded NayaCare: Newborn Speciality Clinic at Your Doorstep.

WOW! I wish this had been around in the eighties! I know myself and colleagues suffered greatly at this time. We were told to bite the bullet and keep going. Great talk, it is always amazing to see women helping women!

Thank you for speaking about this! As a new mom myself I am so glad that there are people like you checking in on new families and paving the way for us to normalize home care again. As a new mom especially post C-section I was SO thankful for this and to not add the extra stressor of going out with my newborn.

This talk was SO eye-opening for me! The fact that maternal mortality in the US is SO much higher than any other industrialized nation, that 78% of those deaths are after birth in the 4th trimester, AND that 4 out of 5 of these deaths are preventable... OMG! Blew me away! I also loved how you illustrated how much this issue impacts the socio-economic well-being of our entire nation. Such important work you are doing! Thank you for shedding light on this topic!

Thank you for bringing to light the trials and tribulations of the 4th trimester! The most difficult of all the trimesters that nobody ever talks about.

Excellent job Sonal!! You are definitely forging the path for a better way to handle the 4th trimester. We need to recognize and address the issues a mom faces during one of the most important phases in her life.

Dr. Sonal Patel does an excellent job of highlighting the often-overlooked costs and challenges faced by families during this important time. As a psychologist, I appreciate the focus on the importance of supporting new mothers and families in their transition to parenthood. This support can have a significant impact on maternal mental health and well-being, which is essential for healthy family dynamics. Great job on bringing attention to this important issue, and for delivering a clear and impactful message."

An important topic explained and explored in incredible detail with data, examples and personal stories to lend it authenticity. Loved it and thank you for bringing this conversation to the forefront. Every pregnancy, postpartum or 4th trimester needs more conversation and moms need to be seen for all that they go through. So many of us go through these difficulties and PPD silently sometimes inspite of the amazing support system we have.
Congratulations and wishing this movement gains momentum!👏 👏
