I heard that he asked his grave to be placed at least 2 spaces away from the nearest grave

This content is what separates the dice dice from the rest of the bunch. This channel really feels like it’s for people who love the hobby not just interested in the next new shinny thing. Thanks for the content and for recognizing Teuber’s contributions.

(Tom's) hats off to you, Mr. Teuber. Thanks for all the fun. Safe trip.

Yeah, Catan got me into the hobby as well. At the time it just hit in all the right ways: strategizing the moment the board was set, jockeying for first positions, the tension when you were too close to an opponent, the trading, the blocking, even the luck and the King making. I haven’t wanted to play it in awhile, but it was definitely a moment. Never knew about his other games; love the Dice Tower retrospectives!

The Settlers of Catan started my board game obsession in 1996. Kudos to you for honouring a board game legend.

Honour where honour is due... Thank you, Tom Vasel.
And thanks, Klaus Teuber, for your games. I didn't only discover an island called Catan, I also discovered a huge and amazing universe full of boardgames. ❤

My brother-in-law introduced us to Settlers of Catan way back in 2005, and it was soon after one of the earliest hobby games in my collection.

Adding my thanks. I might only know of party games and my old childhood games if a friend hadn't brought Settlers back from Germany in the late 90s. Then I started researching what else won the Spiel and off I went. Such enjoyment.

Catan wasn't available when I was a teenager. I wish that it had. My group would have loved a game like this.

I just want to point out that Candamir was based on a Catan book novel - which was an okayish Viking-themed colonization novel of a new, unchartered island in the Atlantic - but it was the first time in my memory that there was a novel based on a popular boardgame. So the fact that they even made a game based on the book based on the game makes it even more influential than it seems!

Wow, very interesting to hear about how he was already successful even before Catan.

One underrated game by Klaus Teuber is Asterix und die Römer. It is a kids game, but thanks to bluffing mechanics in there I had a lot of fun with it.

Watching you talk about a top designer and his games made me wonder about culture changing games. D&D being one of a different class. I would be interested in seeing the Catan series compared to other similars of that time, and whether or not these designers knew each other well.

I played catan probably 50 times before I started purchases of other BoardGames. I never played any other game that much since. Usually max out at 5-7 plays, so it holds a special place

I was lucky to be in a Workshop with Friedemann Friese about boardgames and he stated that Catan the Card Game made it possible to have explaining text on cards in Germany which was not done before except for "niche" games like Magic etc.
If this is true that's a huge impact on game design.

And Carcassonne wouldn't exist without Teuber's Entdecker.

Funny thing, I play board games for a few years, have ~100 games, have a few other friends who also plays and have their own collection yet I have never seen nor played Catan. I assume I'm in some kind of bubble.

Did you ever get to meet Mr Teuber, Tom?

I wonder how much German game designers were influenced by Avalon Hills games brought over by GI's in the 60's and 70's. I grew up in the air force and we were in Germany during the early 70's and remember often seeing Avalon Hills games at base yard sales and the second hand store on base and have no doubt that many of these games ended up in the hands of Germans.
